Whether you drive a Toyota or a Scion vehicle, if it's got disc brakes, they've got brake rotors. The rotors are the discs themselves, attached to the wheel hubs via ribs, and their job is to contact the brake calipers. Since the calipers have brake pads installed on them, that rubbing creates friction -- the resistance required for slowing and stopping the vehicle properly. The rotors also help disperse heat, the main byproduct of the braking process.

There are four main types: blank & smooth (i.e., smooth), slotted, drilled, (i.e., cross-drilled), and drilled & slotted. Many Toyota and Scion cars use smooth, while a lot of both brands' SUVs use either drilled or slotted. Some of their sports cars and performance vehicles, on the other hand, use drilled & slotted.

Whatever kind of brake rotors your model has, though, they'll eventually need to be replaced. When to change them depends on use and age. Most owner's manuals recommend taking care of it about every 70,000 miles or so. Of course, you can also be on the lookout for the signs they've begun failing or gone bad, namely, damaged rotor surfaces, the car wobbling when you brake, and unusual noises during braking. If you see them, do a careful inspection, replacing any rotors necessary. However, be sure you do so in pairs. It'll keep your ride braking the way it's supposed to.
